Choosing a Therapist: What to Ask During Therapy Consultations

So you’re looking for a therapist! Many therapists will offer a free consultation call to see if it’s a good fit. This is a chance to ask any questions you have about therapy in general and how this therapist works. They will also ask you questions about what you’re experiencing and what you’re looking for in therapy.

Often, people don’t know what to ask on these calls. That’s ok! Here are some questions to get you started and guide the consultation.

Consultation Questions for the Therapist

  • “What does a typical session look like?”

  • “What experience do you have treating _______ and how do you treat it? Do you have specific training in this area?”

  • “How would you describe your style as a therapist?”

  • “Do you use a particular model of therapy?”

  • “How do you believe change happens in therapy and how do you measure progress?”

  • “With my last therapist, I liked how they _______. Does that fit your style of therapy?” OR “With my last therapist, I struggled with how they _______ and wanted more _______. Do you think we would be a good fit?”

  • “What are your fees? Do you take insurance, offer superbills for reimbursement, or offer sliding scale spots at a reduced fee?”

  • “What is your availability? How often would we meet?”

Questions to Ask Yourself After the Consultation

Just as important as the answer to these questions is how you feel while speaking to the therapist. The relationship you have with the therapist matters, so the “vibe” you get from the consultation can be as important as their answers. Here are some questions to ask yourself.

  • “Did they answer my questions?”

  • “Did they lead or follow the call in the way I’d want them to in session?”

  • “Did I feel emotionally safe?”

  • “Do they seem knowledgeable and competent?”

  • “Did I feel heard and understood?”

  • “Do they seem empathetic and nonjudgmental?”

  • “Do they seem curious and engaged, like they would actively work to help me?”

  • “Do I feel potential for a trusting relationship to grow here?”

The therapist should not pressure you to get started right away. Feel free to schedule on the spot, or take some time to answer these questions for yourself and get back to them. Good luck in your search, and reach out here for a free consultation with me.
